Built with the mission in mind, Smart Life Farms is a veteran-owned, family-run business first built by George Bricker and Lynn Knight on St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands as part of our commitment to sustainability, food security and on-the-job training for a new generation of farmers. After the 2017 hurricanes wiped out many farms in the Caribbean, we began our quest to bring fresh, healthy produce to the islands. Now Smart Life Farms is looking for a new home. Farming in islands is a wonderful and needed business. It can also be a risky venture. Too often it means dealing with unpredictable weather, hurricanes or typhoons and droughts. We created Smart Life Farms after two Caribbean hurricanes devastated local farms and disrupted supply chains that bring fresh food to communities. On many islands, most of the produce is imported. It's no wonder the shelf life of fresh produce is so short and after 72 hours some of the nutritional value is diminished. With indoor farming, you can grow and harvest every week -- with a smaller carbon footprint using much less water.
At Smart Life Farms, two complementary farming systems operate under one roof: hydroponically grown produce and gourmet mushroom production -- both using climate-controlled technology that brings fresh food closer to where it is consumed. The system uses 95% less water than traditional farming. We even recycle water from air conditioning! The innovative equipment provides needed nutrients directly to the plants in the safest possible closed system. The waterfall-like system is completely contained, so there is virtually no potential for contamination as in outdoor farms that could be subject to potential runoff. To ensure our safety plan is the best it can be, we have been trained in produce growing safety by Cornell University -- and we will train your team.
